Achill Island (Acaill)

Achill Island (Acaill) is the largest island off the Irish coast, joined to the mainland by a bridge at Achill Sound, County Mayo. Its landscape runs from wide sandy beaches and blue-flag bathing strands to bog, mountain and some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe.

The island is a strong draw for walkers, swimmers, surfers and birdwatchers, with seabirds along the cliffs and headlands throughout the year. Roads such as the Atlantic Drive give sweeping views out to sea, and the villages scattered across the island provide places to eat, stay and stop for the night.
