Profile
Cahir Castle stands on a rocky island in the River Suir in the centre of Cahir, County Tipperary. Dating largely from the medieval period and long associated with the Butler family, it is among the largest and best preserved castles in Ireland, with its keep, towers, curtain walls and inner courtyards still substantially intact.
It is managed as a national monument, with guided tours and an exhibition explaining the castle’s defences and history. The riverside walk to the nearby Swiss Cottage makes an easy addition to a visit. Check current opening hours and admission before arriving.
