Profile
Callan Motte is an earthwork in Callan, County Kilkenny, of the type raised in Ireland after the Anglo-Norman arrival: a steep artificial mound that once carried a timber tower, with an attached enclosure below.
Mottes are among the earliest surviving signs of Norman settlement in the Irish landscape, and they mark the towns that grew up under their protection. Little remains beyond the mound itself, but climbing it gives a sense of why the site was chosen and how the town below developed. It is free to visit and takes only a short stop; the ground can be slippery after rain.
