Dún Aonghasa

Dún Aonghasa stands on Inis Mór in the Aran Islands, County Galway, a prehistoric stone fort set on the edge of a sheer Atlantic cliff. Its concentric drystone walls and the jagged defensive stones outside them are among the most striking archaeological remains in Ireland.

The walk up from the visitor centre climbs a rough stone path to the clifftop, where the ground simply ends above the ocean. There are no barriers at the edge, so caution is essential, particularly in wind. The surrounding limestone terrain also supports distinctive flora and seabirds along the cliffs.
