Flaggy Shore Oysters

Flaggy Shore Oysters is a working oyster farm and visitor experience at New Quay Pier in County Clare, on the edge of the Burren and along the Wild Atlantic Way, roughly midway between Galway and the Cliffs of Moher. It takes its name from the Flaggy Shore itself, a stretch of flat limestone pavement running along the Atlantic, where flagstones were once quarried for house floors. The oysters are grown in the clean, Grade A coastal waters here, which are fed by nutrients carried down through the limestone of the Burren.

The farm runs a guided oyster experience in its holding and packaging premises, housed in a red building at the pier behind Linnane’s Lobster Bar. Led by an experienced guide, the session is a hands-on introduction to the world of oysters: how they are farmed, how the local environment shapes their flavour, and how they are graded for the domestic and export markets. Guests learn to shuck the oysters and try different ways of tasting them, with oysters and wine included.

It is a relaxed, informative way to spend time on this part of the Clare coast, combining local history and marine ecology with fresh seafood straight from the water it grew in.
