Profile
Gabhla, or Gola Island, lies off the west coast of County Donegal near Bunbeg, reached by ferry from the mainland in the Gaeltacht. Once home to a settled island community, it was largely abandoned in the mid-twentieth century, and its deserted houses stand among the rocks and grass.
The island is now a quiet place for walking, with sea cliffs, sandy coves and abundant birdlife. Some houses have been restored and the island sees summer visitors, but the mood remains one of stillness and open Atlantic space.
