Profile
The Granuaile Visitor Centre in Louisburgh, County Mayo, is devoted to Grace O’Malley, the sixteenth-century seafaring chieftain known in Irish as Gráinne Mhaol. Displays cover her life, her fleet and her dealings with the English crown, set against the history of Clew Bay and the Gaelic lordships of the west.
Louisburgh makes a natural home for the story, with O’Malley strongholds and island sites scattered around the surrounding coast. It suits anyone interested in Irish history before travelling on towards Achill or Killary.
