Kilkenny Castle

Kilkenny Castle dominates the city from its site above the River Nore at Collegepark. Built by the Anglo-Normans in the twelfth century, it was for centuries the seat of the Butler family, Earls and Dukes of Ormonde, before passing into public ownership and state care.

Guided and self-guided tours take in the restored state rooms, including the Long Gallery hung with family portraits. A tea room and shop occupy part of the complex, and the surrounding grounds make it easy to combine a tour with a walk.
