Profile
Kylemore Abbey stands beside a lake at Pollacappul in Connemara, County Galway, its turreted facade reflected in the water below wooded slopes. Built in the nineteenth century as a private country house, it later became a Benedictine abbey and is one of the best known sights in the west of Ireland.
Visitors can see rooms in the house, the neo-Gothic church built in the grounds, and the restored Victorian walled garden reached by a woodland walk or shuttle. There is a craft shop and cafe on site, and lakeside paths for a longer visit.
