Lough Derg Legendary Food Trails

The Lough Derg Legendary Food Trails are a set of curated food experiences that introduce visitors to the growers, makers and artisan producers of the Lough Derg region. Based around Killaloe in County Clare, part of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, the trails lead visitors to farm shops, markets and small producers along the shores of the lake, pairing tastings and behind-the-scenes visits with local accommodation and activities.

Along the way you can meet the people behind the food and sample what the area is known for, including naturally grown produce, meats, cheeses from grass-fed cows, homemade chocolate, and honey and beeswax from local hives. The experiences are designed to be flexible, matching farm and food visits with places to stay that range from glamping to guesthouses and hotels, so a trail can form part of a longer break in the area.

A regular fixture on the trail is Killaloe Farmers’ Market, held on Sunday mornings from around 11am to 3pm at Between-the-Waters. Running since 2004, it brings together stalls of local produce and remains one of the better-known markets in the region. As the food trails combine visits to working farms and producers, it is worth booking ahead and checking current details directly with the organisers before travelling.
