Muckross Friary

Muckross Friary stands at Carrigafreaghane in County Kerry, within the grounds of Killarney National Park. A ruined Franciscan friary, it retains its church, tower and cloister, with a venerable yew tree growing at the centre of the cloister garth.

The roofless walls and vaulted passages are open to walk through, and the site remained an important burial place for local families long after the friary itself fell out of use. It is reached on foot or by jaunting car from the park’s paths, and pairs easily with a wider visit to the Muckross estate.
