Profile
The Mulranny Saltmarsh at Illanoona in County Mayo lies along the shore of Clew Bay, where tidal channels, saltmarsh and machair grassland meet the sea. It is a distinctive coastal habitat, uncommon in Europe, and supports specialised plants that cope with regular flooding by salt water.
The area is good for birdwatching, particularly for waders and wildfowl feeding on the tidal flats. Boardwalks and the nearby Great Western Greenway give access without damaging the ground, and binoculars are worth carrying.
