Sceilg Mhichíl (Skellig Michael)

Sceilg Mhichil, or Skellig Michael, is the larger of the two Skellig Islands off the coast of County Kerry, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Early medieval monks built a settlement of dry-stone beehive huts near its summit, reached by long flights of stone steps cut into the rock.

Landing trips run only in summer and only when sea conditions allow, and places are limited and booked well ahead. The climb is steep, exposed and unprotected, so a good head for heights and sure footing are essential. Boat trips that circle the islands are an alternative.
