Profile
The Statue of Father Theobald Mathew stands in Dublin’s north city, County Dublin, on O’Connell Street among the line of monuments running the length of the thoroughfare. Father Mathew was the Capuchin priest known as the Apostle of Temperance, who led a mass campaign against alcohol in nineteenth-century Ireland.
The bronze figure is shown in his friar’s habit, hand raised. It is free to see at any time and takes only a moment, but it adds useful context to a walk down one of Dublin’s most historically layered streets.
