The Barony Of Erris Birdwatching

Birdwatching in the Barony of Erris centres on Belmullet, or Béal an Mhuirthead, in north-west County Mayo. The Mullet Peninsula and the surrounding lakes, machair, estuaries and cliffs form one of Ireland’s richest areas for birds.

The location on the western seaboard makes it a landfall for migrants and a wintering ground for waders and wildfowl, while the sea cliffs and offshore islands hold seabird colonies through the summer. Bring binoculars, warm layers and patience, and expect the best of it in the quieter months at either end of the year.
