Toraigh (Tory Island)

Toraigh, better known in English as Tory Island, lies off the north-west coast of County Donegal, the most remote inhabited island in Ireland. Its small Irish-speaking community has long been known for a distinctive tradition of naïve painting and for maintaining the custom of a King of Tory.

The island’s cliffs and rocky shoreline draw birdwatchers, with seabirds gathering along its northern edge through the breeding season. Walking is the main way to get around, and the sense of distance from the mainland is much of the appeal. Crossings depend on weather and sea conditions.
