Profile
Burren Free Range Pork Farm is a small family-run farm near the village of Kilfenora, in County Clare, set in the southern part of the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark. Run by Stephen and Eva, it is a traditional smallholding where rare breed pigs, free range cattle, hens, ducks and donkeys are kept, and it sits on the site of a well-preserved Iron Age ring fort.
The farm’s approach is to keep everything as natural as possible: no chemical fertilisers or pesticides, and no medication added to the animals’ feed. The rare breed pigs, mainly Saddleback and Gloucester Old Spot and their crosses, spend their days outdoors grazing, drawing minerals and nutrients from the grass, herbs and rich soil. This care is reflected in the produce sold at the farm shop, where Burren Pork’s meats have earned recognition, including the Natural Food Award and a national Irish Breakfast Award in 2017.
Visitors are welcome to come and meet the animals, and Stephen, an experienced local guide, can lead tours that take in the area’s history, heritage, geology and botany. There is also the option to stay overnight, with meals prepared using the farm’s own produce when arranged in advance. The farm is family-friendly and part of the Burren Food Trail; visits are by prior arrangement, so it is best to book ahead.
