Caher Bridge Garden

Caher Bridge Garden lies in the Caher Valley near Fanore, in the north of County Clare, set within the distinctive limestone landscape of the Burren. Covering around two acres, it was created by gardener and environmentalist Carl Wright, who began the project in 1999 on ground that was once dense hazel and blackthorn scrub and has developed it largely by hand ever since.

The garden has been designed to blend into its surroundings both visually and ecologically, weaving planting through the natural rock, stone walls and water features of the valley. It is very much a plantsman’s garden, holding extensive collections of unusual plants and bulbs, including more than 200 types of snowdrop and around 150 varieties of hosta, alongside daffodils, crocosmia and day lilies.

Carl Wright designs, maintains and leads tours of the garden himself, so a visit offers the chance to see the planting close up and hear about how it was made. The garden is open by appointment only, and visitors are advised to arrange their visit in advance.
