Duckett's Grove Walled Gardens and Pleasure Grounds

Duckett’s Grove stands in the townland of Rainstown, roughly 10km from Carlow Town in County Carlow, Ireland. Once the centrepiece of a vast estate belonging to the Duckett family, the great house was the focal point of the surrounding countryside from the mid-18th century until it was gutted by fire in the 1930s, and its towered ruin remains a landmark to this day. Built as a Georgian country house around 1745, it was reworked from the 1820s in a castellated Gothic Revival style by the English architect Thomas Cobden for John Dawson Duckett. The result is a striking silhouette of towers and turrets in varying round, square and octagonal shapes, ornamented with oriels and statue-filled niches.

A fire in the 1930s destroyed the interior of the house, and today the building survives as a roofless ruin that remains closed to the public. The dramatic Gothic exterior, however, still stands and gives the site its distinctive character. Carlow County Council acquired Duckett’s Grove in 2005 and, after restoring its two interconnecting walled gardens, opened the grounds as a public park in 2007.

The two walled gardens are the main draw for visitors. The Upper Walled Garden is planted with historical shrub roses, a collection of Chinese and Japanese peonies and a range of flowering shrubs, while the Lower Walled Garden occupies the site of the family’s old orchard and now grows fruit including figs and heritage Irish apple varieties. Beyond the gardens there are pleasure grounds to wander, a children’s playground, a craft studio in the courtyard, parking and toilets. Guided tours and free audio guides are offered, and the grounds are open year-round.
