Killimer Port (Killimer to Tarbert Ferry)

Killimer Port, in County Clare, is the northern terminal of the Shannon Ferry, the roll-on/roll-off car and passenger service that crosses the Shannon Estuary between Killimer and Tarbert in County Kerry. The crossing takes around 20 minutes and gives travellers a direct link between West Clare and Kerry, avoiding the much longer road journey inland via Limerick city.

The ferry service began in 1969, when families on both sides of the estuary invested together to set up the company that runs the route. It is operated today by Shannon Ferries. Two vessels, the Shannon Dolphin and the Shannon Breeze, work the crossing, with hourly sailings running through most of the year and a more frequent timetable during the summer months.

The service operates on a first-come, first-served basis rather than by advance booking, with tickets available on board. As part of the Wild Atlantic Way, the crossing is a scenic way to continue a journey along the west coast, giving passengers wide views over the waters of the Shannon Estuary as they travel between the two counties.
