Profile
Matty’s Pub & Accommodation is a traditional country pub with self-catering accommodation in County Carlow, in the Royal Oak area near Bagenalstown (Muine Bheag). It has been run by the same family since 1904 and occupies a building said to date back considerably longer, giving it a long-standing place in the life of the surrounding countryside. It remains a genuine rural pub and is popular with locals and visitors alike.
Alongside the bar and beer garden, the property offers five modern self-catering apartments. Each has its own kitchen, en-suite bathroom and heating, with amenities including fast Wi-Fi, free on-site parking and an electric car charging point. The combination of a working pub and comfortable, independent apartments makes it a practical base for exploring the area.
The pub sits about a five-minute walk from the River Barrow, with its walking trails, angling and cycling routes, and lies on stage five of the Barrow Way long-distance path, which runs through Kildare, Laois and Carlow. Set within Ireland’s Ancient East, it is well placed for touring the south-east, with Kilkenny city within easy reach.
