Saint Marys Church Of Ireland

Saint Mary’s Church of Ireland stands on Church Street in Carlow town, County Carlow. The present church was built in 1727 and is the parish church of Carlow within the Church of Ireland’s Diocese of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory. Its most recognisable feature is the tall tower and spire, added in 1834, which rises to around 60 metres and remains one of the most prominent landmarks on the Carlow skyline.

Architecturally the building blends classical and Gothic elements. Inside, it has kept its traditional galleries and contains several monuments and statues associated with the noted neo-classical architect Sir Richard Morrison. The church also holds examples of stained glass by Catherine O’Brien of An Túr Gloine, the Dublin studio celebrated for its early twentieth-century Irish stained-glass work, and it houses a set of tubular bells.

A working parish church rather than a museum, Saint Mary’s welcomes visitors interested in its architecture, heritage and craftsmanship.
