Shannon Ferries

Shannon Ferries operates a car and passenger ferry across the Shannon Estuary, sailing from Killimer in County Clare to Tarbert on the Kerry shore. The crossing takes around twenty minutes and provides a direct link between the two counties, sparing drivers the much longer road journey inland via Limerick. It forms a natural part of a Wild Atlantic Way itinerary, connecting the attractions of Clare, such as the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren, with those of Kerry to the south.

The service was established in 1969 and it is the longest domestic ferry crossing in Ireland. It runs throughout the year, with hourly departures and more frequent sailings during the summer months. The fleet consists of two roll-on, roll-off vessels, the Shannon Dolphin and the Shannon Breeze, which carry cars, coaches, cyclists and foot passengers. A single vessel covers the normal timetable, with the second added at busier times of year.

No reservation is required, as fares are paid on board, though tickets bought online in advance are typically cheaper. The Killimer terminal has a gift shop selling teas, coffees and sandwiches, along with outdoor seating and toilet facilities. As timetables and fares vary by season, it is worth checking the operator’s website before travelling.
