Profile
Tullow Museum tells the story of Tullow and its surrounding area in County Carlow, Ireland. It occupies a former Methodist church dating from around 1850, a stone building beside the River Slaney bridge on Bridge Street in the centre of the town. The museum is run on a voluntary basis by the Tullowphelim Historical Society.
Inside, visitors find an eclectic collection of artefacts drawn from local history. A significant focus falls on Father John Murphy and the 1798 Rebellion; Father Murphy was captured near Tullow and executed in the town, and the museum displays what are believed to be his last vestments. Other holdings include items relating to the Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, collections connected with local shops and industry, and a wealth of old photographs.
The museum is also a useful resource for those researching family history, holding genealogical records and headstone inscriptions from local burial grounds. Admission is free, with voluntary contributions welcome. Opening hours are generally Tuesday to Friday, and visits by appointment can be arranged, so it is worth checking current details before travelling.
