Ballycuggeran

Ballycuggeran is a freshwater bathing area on the shore of Lough Derg, near Killaloe in County Clare. Lough Derg is one of the largest lakes in Ireland, and the calm, tide-free water here makes it a popular spot for swimming and paddling through the summer. The beach holds Blue Flag status, one of a small number of Blue Flag freshwater sites on the lake, and lifeguards are on duty during the bathing season.

The setting is a good deal quieter than a coastal beach, with open views across the water and no waves or currents of any consequence. The wider area is of real ecological interest: it forms part of a Special Protection Area and supports wintering waterfowl, including Greenland white-fronted geese, common terns and cormorants, so it appeals to those who enjoy watching wildlife as much as to swimmers.

Ballycuggeran also serves as a starting point for walking. Way-marked trails run through the adjoining Crag Wood and link into the wider network of paths around this part of East Clare, including routes climbing towards the higher ground of the Slieve Bernagh hills. There is free car parking on site and a notice board with local information. Dogs are welcome on a lead, though access is restricted during the busiest daytime hours in summer. Entry is free of charge.
