Lough Derg Blueway South

Lough Derg Blueway South is an outdoor activity trail based around the town of Killaloe in County Clare, on the western shore of Lough Derg where the lake narrows into the River Shannon. Killaloe sits directly across the water from Ballina in County Tipperary, the two towns linked by an old multi-arch bridge, and together they serve as the southern gateway to the wider Lough Derg Blueway.

A Blueway is a network of accredited water- and land-based trails, and this southern section gives visitors several ways to enjoy the lake and its surroundings. You can take to the water by kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard, follow lakeside walking paths and heritage trails through the towns, or explore the area by bike. The setting of rolling hills and open water makes it a relaxed base for a day out or a longer stay.

Killaloe and Ballina are lively little towns with pubs, cafés, restaurants and galleries along their narrow streets, and there is history close at hand. Just outside Killaloe lies Béal Ború, an earthen ringfort associated with Brian Ború, the High King of Ireland. Boat trips also operate on the Shannon and Lough Derg during the season, and the town is a well-known spot for coarse and pike fishing.
